Long-term operation can cause wear, corrosion and fatigue on metal equipment surfaces, affecting precision and performance and creating safety risks. Surface repair restores or improves function and is an important part of industrial maintenance.
I. Core restoration needs and applications
Common types of metal surface damage include:
Wear damage: surface material loss caused by friction, such as gear meshing and bearing operation;
Corrosion damage: chemical reactions between metal and water, acids, alkalis or salt spray;
Fatigue damage: microcracks form under alternating loads, grow and eventually cause structural failure.
Metal damage occurs across aerospace, automotive and heavy machinery, including turbine blade erosion, oilfield pipeline corrosion and die wear. Repair needs range from precision parts to large equipment.
II. Main restoration technologies and their characteristics
Welding repair technology
Arc or laser heat sources deposit filler metal on damaged areas, as in TIG welding and plasma hardfacing. These can fill large defects, but distortion in the heat-affected zone must be considered.
Thermal spray technology
High temperatures melt metal powders or ceramics for surface spraying, forming wear- and corrosion-resistant coatings. Examples include HVOF and plasma spraying, with strong substrate bonding for demanding service.
Electroplating and electroless plating
Electroplating uses electrolysis to deposit metal layers such as chromium or nickel. Electroless plating uses redox reactions without an external power supply, such as nickel-phosphorus deposition. Both can correct dimensional deviations and improve surface hardness.
Laser cladding
A high-energy laser melts metal powder and the substrate surface to form a metallurgical bond. High precision and low thermal damage make it suitable for precision components such as aero-engine blades.
Cold welding and mechanical restoration
Cold welding bonds materials using high-frequency pulses without thermal distortion. Mechanical methods such as sleeving or patching suit emergency repairs and simple structures.
III. Technology trends and value
Metal surface repair is developing towards greater precision, environmental performance and intelligent operation:
Nanotechnology: nanocomposite coatings improve wear and corrosion resistance of the repair layer;
Intelligent inspection and process optimisation: locate defects using non-destructive methods such as ultrasound and eddy current testing, and optimise repair parameters through simulation;
Environmental processes: water-based electroplating and lower-energy spraying reduce pollution emissions.
The source describes repair as extending equipment life, reducing replacement costs to approximately 1/3-1/5 of buying new, and reducing resource waste. Reuse of key parts can support sustainability and manufacturing competitiveness.Pending confirmation
